The North East’s five universities, Durham, Newcastle, Northumbria, Sunderland and Teesside, are making an increasingly important contribution to the UK’s defence, security and national resilience agenda.
Across our region, universities are delivering world-leading research, developing future talent and working with industry, government and defence partners to tackle some of the UK’s most pressing challenges. Our collective strengths are helping to shape a safer, more secure and resilient future.
This shared commitment is reflected in the fact that all five UNEE universities have received recognition through the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme, demonstrating their support for defence personnel, reservists, veterans and military families.
Recent national announcements have reinforced this growing profile. Last week, Durham University, Newcastle University and Northumbria University were selected as one of the 35 founding members of the UK’s new Defence Universities Alliance (DUA), creating new opportunities for collaboration, skills development and innovation.
In addition, in June it was announced that Durham, Newcastle and Teesside were among 24 institutions awarded Ministry of Defence funding to expand capacity and enhance facilities for courses that support critical national security skills.
Together, these developments highlight the depth and breadth of expertise that exists across the North East’s universities and the valuable contribution our region is making to UK defence capability.
We are committed to building on these strengths, fostering collaboration and innovation, and helping to find solutions to some of the nation’s most significant opportunities and challenges. By working together, we continue to support a more prosperous, secure and resilient future for the North East and the UK.
